What is the Erasmus+ Programme?

The Erasmus+ Programme is a European Union initiative designed to promote cooperation among higher education institutions across Europe. It provides non-repayable financial support (grants) to enable universities to develop joint projects and implement student and staff mobility activities.

In addition, the programme seeks to improve higher education in line with the needs of the labour market by strengthening collaboration between universities and industry, thereby enhancing the employability of university graduates.

Who Was Erasmus?

The Erasmus+ Programme is named after Desiderius Erasmus (1466–1536), a Dutch philosopher, theologian, and one of the leading figures of Renaissance humanism. Erasmus made significant contributions to the development of European intellectual and cultural unity through scholarship and education. His most famous work, In Praise of Folly (Moriae Encomium), remains one of the most influential critiques of dogmatism and intolerance. Having lived and worked in various European countries throughout his life, Erasmus symbolizes academic mobility, intercultural dialogue, and the pursuit of knowledge beyond national borders.

Objectives of the Erasmus+ Programme

The primary objective of the Erasmus+ Programme is to enhance the quality of higher education in Europe while strengthening its international and European dimensions. The programme achieves these goals by:

  • Promoting international cooperation among higher education institutions;

  • Encouraging student, academic, and administrative staff mobility across Europe;

  • Supporting the recognition and transparency of academic studies, qualifications, and degrees obtained in participating countries;

  • Facilitating the exchange of knowledge, best practices, and innovative educational approaches among European universities.

Who Can Participate?

The Erasmus+ Programme is open to students, academic staff, and administrative personnel of higher education institutions located in countries participating in the programme.

Universities, institutes, academies, and other higher education institutions officially recognized by their national authorities may participate in Erasmus+ after obtaining the necessary institutional authorization from the European Commission. Once approved, these institutions may engage in student and staff mobility, academic cooperation, and joint educational projects throughout the programme period.

What Erasmus+ Is Not

The Erasmus+ Programme is not:

  • A foreign language learning programme;

  • A scholarship programme in the traditional sense;

  • A degree-awarding programme;

  • A research programme.
