Research Laboratory

Our research laboratory, established in a 100 m² area, facilitates studies in the fields of fruit, vegetable, vine, and ornamental plants. The laboratory is equipped to conduct chemical, biochemical, and physical analyses on plant samples.

Vase Life Laboratory

Our vase life laboratory, established in a 40 m² area, is dedicated to research on the postharvest durability of cut flowers. This facility was brought to our department and faculty by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğba KILIÇ as part of the 1002 Rapid Support Project.

Tissue Culture Laboratory

Our tissue culture laboratory consists of a preparation room, a transfer room for sterile operations, and a growth chamber with controlled light, temperature, and humidity. Various in vitro culture methods are tested here, focusing on objectives such as rapid propagation, genetic resource conservation, secondary metabolite production, preservation of endangered species, and the cultivation of species that are challenging to propagate.

Student Research and Application Laboratories

The student application laboratory, established in an 80 m² area, is equipped with 20 stereo binocular microscopes and 15 light microscopes for student use. Additionally, there is a stereo binocular microscope with a digital HD camera connected to a projector. This setup allows instructors to demonstrate detailed examinations of sample materials in real-time, enabling students to observe the materials on their own microscopes simultaneously.

Furthermore, to enhance students' computer skills, a computer laboratory with 30 fully equipped computers is available for use.

Devices and Analyses Conducted in the Department of Horticulture Laboratory

The laboratories mentioned above are equipped with the following devices, enabling a wide range of analyses. Researchers wishing to utilize these resources can contact the laboratory supervisors to work within a planned schedule.

Spectrophotometric Analyses

  • Analysis of phenolic compounds (total phenolics, flavanols, flavonols, anthocyanins, etc.) (spectrophotometer)
  • Enzyme activity analyses (antioxidant enzyme activities: SOD, CAT, APX, etc.) (spectrophotometer)
  • Analyses related to stress components (proline, MDA, hydrogen peroxide, lipid peroxidation, membrane damage) (spectrophotometer)
  • Total soluble protein analyses (spectrophotometer)

Titrimetric Analyses

  • Vitamin C analysis (automatic titrator, pH meter)
  • Titrable acidity analyses (automatic titrator, pH meter)

Mineral Content Preparation

  • Sample preparation for mineral content analysis (burning unit-ash furnace)

Plant Extract Preparation

  • Analytical balance, homogenizer, evaporator, vortex mixer, fume hood, centrifuge, water bath/ultrasonic water bath

Other Analyses

  • Chlorophyll determination (chlorophyll meter)
  • Anthocyanin determination (anthocyanin meter)
  • Leaf area measurement (area meter)
  • Plant stem/shoot growth measurement (caliper)

Laboratory Supervisors

  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Servet ARAS
  • Dr. Selda DALER
  • Lecturer Selcan ÖZYALIN
