"Ary-ka-wanda The Place near the High Cliff"

The first systematic archaeological excavations in Arykanda, a Lycian City, were carried out by Prof. Cevdet Bayburtluoğlu between 1971 and 2010. Since 2011, it has been conducted by Assoc. Prof. Macit Tekinalp from Hacettepe University Faculty of Letters, Art History De-partment. Assoc. Prof. Hacer Sancaktar, one of the faculty members of our department, undertakes the duty of the Vice President of Excavation.

Arykanda City, located in the east of the Lycian Region, is on an important road route that connects Phoinikos Port to the Kabalia plain in the interior and the Pisidia Region. Arykanda City, which is also known as the "Lycian Milas" together with the cities of Khoma, Kandyba, Podalia and Nisa due to its location in the region, is located in the northeast of Arif Village on the highway between Elmalı and Finike. Charles Fellows was the first to say that the ruins near Arif Village belonged to Arykanda. Fellows, who set out from Limyra to Arif at the end of the first week of May 1838 on his second trip to the Lycian Region, first determined that the river flowing through the valley was Arykandos (Aykırçay or Başgöz), then Arykanda was 35 miles from the sea, In his own words, he has reached the joy of finding "a city unknown for 20 centuries".
