Department of Art History – Undergraduate Programme

The Department of Art History was established in 2009 within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Yozgat Bozok University and began offering undergraduate education in the 2018–2019 academic year.

The Undergraduate Programme in Art History aims to equip students with the ability to evaluate works of art within their historical, cultural, and social contexts. Students learn to examine, identify, and classify works of art from different periods and regions in terms of their materials, techniques, styles, and iconographic characteristics. The programme also enables students to use research methods effectively and to develop the ability to access, critically evaluate, and communicate knowledge in accordance with scholarly principles.

Delivered in close interaction with disciplines such as archaeology, architecture, museology, history, literature, and folklore, the programme combines theoretical knowledge with practical training. Architectural drawing, the documentation of archaeological finds, the assessment of ethnographic objects, and documentation and inventory studies constitute important components of the programme.

The department also recognises the new opportunities that digital technologies offer for art-historical and cultural-heritage studies. It encourages the use of contemporary approaches such as digital archiving, databases, geographic information systems, three-dimensional documentation, and artificial-intelligence-assisted research methods in teaching and research.

The department aims to educate art historians who can identify, document, and interpret cultural assets and who possess a strong awareness of their preservation. Students also have opportunities to gain professional experience by participating in archaeological excavations and field surveys conducted by the department and other universities.
