Academic Divisions

The Department of Art History comprises four academic divisions: Western and Contemporary Art, Byzantine Art, General Art History, and Turkish-Islamic Art. Each division contributes to the department’s teaching and scholarly research in accordance with its field of specialisation.

Division of Western and Contemporary Art

The Division of Western and Contemporary Art examines the development of Western art across different periods, together with modern and contemporary art, through architecture, painting, sculpture, and other visual arts. Works of art are evaluated in relation to the historical and social conditions in which they were produced, as well as through theories of art, methods of criticism, and contemporary artistic approaches.

Division of Byzantine Art

The Division of Byzantine Art examines the artistic and cultural production of the Byzantine Empire in Anatolia and other regions. Byzantine architecture, wall paintings, mosaics, manuscripts, minor arts, and iconographic traditions are studied within their historical, cultural, and religious contexts.

Division of General Art History

The Division of General Art History addresses the theoretical and methodological foundations of art history and artistic production from different periods and regions. Art historiography, aesthetics, research methods, cultural heritage, conservation, and museology are examined through an interdisciplinary approach.

Division of Turkish-Islamic Art

The Division of Turkish-Islamic Art examines works of art and architecture produced in the Turkish and Islamic worlds across different periods and regions. Architectural monuments and works in stone, wood, tile, ceramics, metal, textiles, and the arts of the book are studied in terms of their historical development, technical characteristics, and decorative programmes.
