The Department of City and Regional Planning, affiliated with the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at Yozgat Bozok University, began admitting students in the 2003–2004 academic year. Students wishing to pursue studies in City and Regional Planning are expected to have a strong foundation in mathematics, geography, art, and the social sciences, including sociology, history, art history, humanities, and cultural studies. Urban planning is an interdisciplinary field concerned with the preparation and implementation of research, plans, programmes, and projects based on scientific methods and within the broader framework of national settlement and development policies. The Department aims to educate graduates who are capable of conducting scientific research in areas such as regional planning, urban planning, urban design, urban conservation and renewal, disaster planning, environmental issues, sustainable development, and urban transformation, while also developing the knowledge and skills required for professional practice.

Contemporary discussions in Türkiye and across Europe increasingly emphasise the practice-oriented nature of planning education (TUPOB, 2007). Undergraduate education in the Department combines theoretical courses with practical, studio-based learning. Throughout the four-year programme, students undertake planning and design projects focusing on different cities and study areas as part of the studio courses offered each semester. Instructors guide individual students and project groups through regular feedback and one-to-one discussions. This studio-based mentorship model distinguishes planning education from many conventional undergraduate programmes. Theoretical courses complement studio education by providing students with essential knowledge of spatial planning, legal and technical frameworks, scientific and ethical principles, and broader issues related to society, culture, and urban development. Together, theoretical and studio courses are designed to provide an integrated educational framework and to develop the knowledge and skills required for planning at different spatial scales.
