The proposal to establish a department and sub-departments within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Yozgat Bozok University was reviewed during the Higher Education Executive Board meeting on March 25, 2009. In accordance with Article 7/d-2 of Law No. 2547, as amended by Law No. 2880, the Department of Foreign Languages was established with the aim of fostering international friendship, contributing to the development of Yozgat, and facilitating communication with the world. Within the framework of the Department of Foreign Languages, programs targeting both the Far East and the Western world were initiated, including Translation Studies, Japanese Language and Literature, Spanish Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, German Language and Literature, and French Language and Literature.

On November 23, 2021, the Department of Foreign Languages was divided into two departments: Eastern Languages and Literatures and Western Languages and Literatures. Under the Department of Western Languages and Literatures, programs in English Language and Literature, Spanish Language and Literature, and German Language and Literature were established.

The Department of Western Languages and Literatures currently employs one professor, one associate professor, three assistant professors, and three research assistants, one of whom holds a doctorate and another affiliated with the ÖYP program.

In alignment with the realities of the 21st century, which emphasize the inevitability of intercultural communication, the department recognizes the critical role of language in facilitating cultural exchange. It is a primary mission to promote the widespread use of English, Spanish, and German—three languages with significant global reach. Establishing programs at Yozgat Bozok University to translate the literary and historical heritages of these societies into Turkish and to train individuals proficient in these languages holds immense significance.

Currently, only the English Language and Literature Program admits students, while the other programs remain in the establishment phase.

The medium of instruction for the English Language and Literature Undergraduate Program is English. For students whose language proficiency is insufficient, a mandatory preparatory year is offered to ensure their success in undergraduate studies. Students who pass the exemption exam conducted at the beginning of the academic year may directly start their education in the first year.

The courses offered in the department equip undergraduate students with skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and, most notably, critical thinking through the analysis of literary works.

Fourth-year undergraduate students are required to study a second foreign language. They can choose from Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Latin, or Greek. This ensures that graduates of the department not only master English fluently but also gain foundational knowledge of another language.

Graduates of the program often obtain teaching certificates and work as English teachers or lecturers in educational institutions. Additionally, they are well-prepared individuals with advanced English language skills and extensive cultural and literary knowledge, enabling them to work in state or private media organizations, the tourism and advertising sectors, banks, and ministries. Beyond these diverse career opportunities, they can also serve as writers, editors, or translators.
