GENERAL DESCRIPTION
History
The English Language and Literature Programme, which was openeded within the framework of the Western Languages and Literatures Department, established in 2009, started the student admission in the 2018-2019 academic year. The academic staff includes one Professor, two Turkish Assistant Professors, and two research assistants. The departmental courses are aimed at directing students to multidisciplinary work aimed at providing information in the fields of contemporary popular culture and critical theory as well as deep-rooted literary and cultural traditions. Students are subject to the Preparatory Programme implemented by the School of Foreign Languages, where they will have the opportunity to improve their English reading, listening, writing and speaking skills. All students accepted to our department are required to enroll into the Preparatory Programme Exemption Exam.

Specific Admission Requirements
Students are admitted to English Language and Literature Programme through the Higher Education Transition Examination (YGS) conducted by ÖSYM. Each year 70 students are admitted.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Normal education is 4 years. In order to obtain a bachelor's degree from the English Language and Literature Programme, students must take and complete all the required courses and have a GPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00. A total of 240 ECTS must be completed, including 60 ECTS of elective courses.
Profile of the Programme
English Language and Literature Programme comprises 240 ECTS. Elective courses that constitute 25% of the curriculum are offered in each semester. Elective courses consist of two groups, including compulsory electives and second language elective courses.
Educational Objectives of the Programme
1 To provide students with the necessary knowledge and equipment about English language, culture, history and literature.
2 To train students as philologists who have a critical perspective, have developed analytical skills, can communicate effectively, are creative, aware of their responsibilities and professional ethics.
3 To ensure that students grow up as individuals who can communicate interculturally and interpret these cultures through English literature.
4 To raise individuals who can combine the values of our country and society with the values of the West, assimilate and express these values correctly and effectively.
5 To enable students to use English at an advanced level, as well as to provide them with the ability to teach this language.
6 To ensure that students grow up as individuals who can adapt to the requirements of the age and use information technologies effectively.
7 To integrate students into society as individuals who can conduct research in their fields and evaluate these researches from an impartial and scientific perspective.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples
The business area of graduates of English Language and Literature will first emerge when our students determine in which field they will develop themselves and the profession they dream of. The vast majority of department graduates are employed as English teachers. For this reason, students who graduate from the programme can become teachers in public schools, private schools and foreign language courses within the Ministry of Education; If they continue their postgraduate education at home or abroad, they will have the opportunity to work as academicians in a way that they can meet the demand of instructors in the field of English Language and Literature in Turkish universities. Graduates of the Department of English Language and Literature can also work in the field of translation. In our country, they will be able to find jobs in the fields requiring cultural and literary knowledge such as tourism sector and ministries, banks, media institutions affiliated to the state and the private sector, which have a high potential and qualified labor force, and may even be employed as writers and editors. In our country, our students who aim to work as teachers in state institutions, especially in public schools, are assigned to state institutions with 4062 qualification code by entering KPSS (Public Personnel Selection Exam).
Access to Further Studies
Students with a Bachelor's Degree are elligible to apply for a Master's or a Ph.D. degree, provided they have obtained the required score from ALES (Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam) and certified their compatibility in the English language.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Students are subjected to a midterm, a quiz and a final exam for each course. The contribution of midterm and quiz exams to the success grade is 40% and the contribution of final exam is 60%.
Graduation Requirements
In order for students to graduate, they have to take courses and achieve 240 ECTS credits offered in the undergraduate curriculum; GPA averages should be 2.00 out of 4.00.

7 Analyzes literary and cultural texts with an interdisciplinary approach within the framework of contemporary theories.
8 Teaches English and English literature and culture subjects at national and international levels.
9 Develops translation strategies for different text types and translates competently from English to Turkish and vice versa.
10 Acquires professional ethical values and uses these values in research and production process.
11 Conducts independent research using critical, creative and analytical thinking skills, solves problems and expresses the results using effective tools in national and international professional and social environments.
12 Gets ready for professional life by gaining a sense of responsibility through individual studies and group projects.
13 Gains the ability to conduct scientific research, evaluate sources and write academic articles at undergraduate level.
